Brad and Ashleys: Brad informs Jack that he will recruit Victor to help get through to Ashley. Jack compares Ashley’s attraction to Victor as that of a moth to a flame.
Jack is pissed about Victor coming over.
“What you gonna do? Put ‘em in a room together? I think it’s risky.”
“I have to try and pull Ash out of this,” Brad explains. He doesn’t like the idea, but feels it is the last resort before going to the hospital.
Jack takes this in, does that bitey lip thing.
Athletic Club: Christine sees Victor having lunch at the Athletic Club. She sits down by him, wanting to talk, and asks him if he’s represented by an attourney because she wants to talk about case. Victor informs her that Michael Baldwin is an advisor but not representing him.
Victor: “You don’t mind wasting taxpayer’s money. Do me a favor get to the point.”
Christine: “A lot of people feel that the law is too soft on corporate crime”
Victor: “It’s because of people like me that people have jobs.”
Christine: “You are not above the law. That’s irrelevant.”
Victor points out that Christine has the discretionary power to choose cases, and demands that she drops his.
Christine: “I have enough evidence. It amounts to a smoking gun.”
Victor: “Allelujah, you done your job.”
C: I was hoping you’d confess now before it’s too late.
Victor is pissed as hell. “Are you trying to frighten me?”
C: “Yes. Plead guilty now.” She tries hard to explain that many people want to see a big corp. honcho behind bars.
Victor asks for guaranteed no jailtime, which she can’t fork over. Finally, Victor fumes, “If the lord deems I should be punished so be it, but I will not speed things along.
C looks hopeless.
Marsino’s: Paul Williams walks in, and introduces himself as a private investigator. Bobby is a little suspicious.
“Take it easy,” Paul assures him. “I’m not a cop.” Bobby admits that he thought it had something to do with a dancer at the club (referring to Britney and her father). Paul informs him he has questions about his bookkeeper, Kevin the Child Molester. Bobby tells Paul that Kevin isn’t his favorite person.
“Be careful, or he might burn your club down,” Paul replies.
Paul asks Bobby some revealing questions about Kevin. “How does he relate to the women?”
“They tease him, come on to him, and make him squirm.” He mentions he heard about problems he had with a girl who turned out to be underage. Quickly adds that the girls at the club are all legal.
Paul admits that he’s looking into Kevin as a favor to a friend.
Bobby quips, “Who are you? The Lone Ranger?”
Paul informs Bobby that the underage girlfriend’s father is very good friend, she got an STD.
Bobby is not surprised. He says he can tell that Kevin is a coward and was probably slapped around as a kid. “Any sign of a threat they fall apart. Young girl, no threat, perfect sense.”
Paud adds that there is a good chance that Kevin is the one who burned down Gina’s. “Fisher had the motive and the timing was right, but no trace.”
Bobby says he will help anyway he can. “People who start fires are the same as people who get slapped around.” Bobby and Paul agree that people like Kevin tend to go on serious power trips as well.
Bobby: I have the kind of business where I don’t want other people’s problems be my problems.
Paul jokes, “I’d check to make sure your smoke detectors are working.”
Bobby is not threatened. “I’ll chop his whole arm off,” he says. He also intends to fire Kevin.
Bobby is drinking coffee.
Fenmore’s: Kevin walks into Fenmore’s, curious about the boutique. Lauren is alone in the store, doing inventory, and doesn’t realize that she’s left the OPEN sign on. Kevin apologizes for interrupting her, explaining that he just wanted to look around because he’d heard a lot about the place. Lauren invites him to take a look around the store, and if he finds anything he wants, she’ll put it aside for him so he can buy it the next day.
“Thanks,” Kevin says, shyly. “That’s nice, most people aren’t that way.”
“Interesting comment about people not being kind,” Lauren observes.
Kevin explains to her that most people are in a hurry and not willing to cut anyone any breaks.
“You don’t look like a cynic!” Lauren exclaims, laughing.
Kevin: “You threw me when you laughed, you sound like my mom. She had a pretty laugh, didn’t get to hear it much growing up.”
Lauren: “What was she like?”
Kevin: “We weren’t close, she was charming, beautiful, but not much of a parent. Lost touch awhile back. Sometimes you’re better off. I can’t believe I’m saying all this to you. I know you’re not gonna judge me or make fun of me. You’re a really nice woman, Ms. Fenmore. You treat me like an equal, a friend, that means a lot.”
Lauren: “I believe do unto others.”
Kevin feels they are on the same wavelength and tells her that she is very easy to talk to, and that most girls his age are quick to judge. He’s smiling and feeling better.
“Have to get back to work because I’m a slavedriver as a boss. Come back anytime,” Lauren says, which is his cue to leave.
Paul comes in Fenmore’s after Kevin leaves, just missing each other. He has brought Lauren a rib dinner.
